The 20 best shoujo anime you need to watch!

animes shoujo

Shoujo anime is usually aimed at teenage girls or young women and focuses on a protagonist and her romantic adventures.

But that is not a rule, there are subgenres like Mahou Shoujo that normally the female character has magical powers, and there are cases where the protagonist goes on romantic adventures with a person of the same sex that would be Shoujo-Ai.

Didn't get it right? Or do you want to go deeper into the shoujo genre? Then see this article explaining in detail what are shoujo anime.

My review:

With colorful and realistic characters, breathtaking events and just a hint of music, it creates a world in which every girl can forget reality and engage in romantic fantasies.

One of the best things about Nana is the characters we can actually see reflecting ourselves in some of them and believe that someone like that can really exist. A sensational shoujo anime !!

Also check out this incredible AMV by Nana, where it shows a little bit of the history of this anime shoujo with a jaw-dropping soundtrack!

AMV Anime Nana

Synopsis:

Nana Komatsu is a naive and helpless 20 year old who falls in love easily and becomes dependent and sticky on the people around her.

Although she has ambitious dreams of withdrawing from her provincial roots and finding her true calling, she ends up traveling to Tokyo with the humble reason to pursue her current boyfriend Shouji Endo.

Nana Osaki, on the other hand, is a proud and enigmatic vocalist of punk rock of an equally rural origin, who has the desire to become a professional singer.

Putting her career with a very popular band (and her passionate romance with one of their former members) firmly behind her, she boards the same train for Nana Komatsu for Tokyo.

Through a fateful encounter on their journey towards the metropolis, young women with the same name are brought together, triggering a chain of events that end up sharing an apartment.

As the friendship deepens, the two try to support each other in a thick and thin way, their lives deeply intertwined, full of romance, music, challenges and hurts that will eventually test their seemingly unbreakable bond.

2. Natsume Yuujinchou

Natsume Yuujinchou
Natsume Yuujinchou
  • Name in English: Natsume's Book of Friends
  • Japanese name: Natsume Yuujinchou
  • Genre: Slice of Life, Demons, Supernatural, Drama, Shoujo
  • Episodes: 13
  • Displayed: July 8, 2008 to September 30, 2008
  • Studio: Brain's Base
  • Trailer: Dubbed teaser
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll EN

My review:

Natsume Yuujinchou is a little gem in a series and I'm happy to have followed a friend's recommendation to watch it. The series basically consists of independent episodes, where Natsume seeks to help him with his problems and to return his names. Generally, anime has a very optimistic view of things, but it does not cover up the potential emotional tragedy.

This shoujo anime is a fantasy masterpiece. If you are in the mood to cry happy tears (male tears, of course) or just watching a great show, then this is a must see show.

If you found it interesting to take a look at this creepy AMV, you won't be sorry!

AMV Natsume's Book of Friends

Synopsis:

While most fifteen-year-old boys, in one way or another, keep secrets related to girls, Takashi Natsume has a peculiar and terrifying secret involving youkai: as long as he remembers, he has always been pursued by these spirits.

Natsume soon discovers that his late grandmother Reiko had passed him the Yuujinchou, or "Book of Friends", which contains the names of the spirits she brought under his control.

Now in Natsume's possession, the book also gives Reiko's grandson this power, which is why these enraged beings now pursue him in hopes of achieving freedom in some way.

With no parents and a loving home, and constantly being hunted by hostile and merciless youkai, Natsume is looking for solace - a place he belongs to.

However, his only companion is a self-proclaimed bodyguard named Madara.

Affectionately referred to as Nyanko-sensei, Madara is a mysterious feline spirit, the size of a pint, who has his own reasons for staying with the boy.

Based on the critically acclaimed manga by Yuki Midorikawa, Natsume Yuujinchou is an unconventional and supernatural series that follows Natsume as he, with his infamous protector Madara, tries to free the spirits bound by his grandmother's contract.

3. Ouran Koukou Host Club

Ouran Koukou Host Club
Ouran Koukou Host Club
  • Name in English: Ouran High School Host Club
  • Japanese name: Ouran Koukou Host Club
  • Genre: Comedy, Harem, Romance, School, Shoujo
  • Episodes: 26
  • Displayed: April 5, 2006 to September 27, 2006
  • Studio: Bones
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: ??

My review:

Looking for an anime shoujo with a little comedy? Look no further, Ouran High School will not fall short of that aspect. All characters are uniquely kind. Each person has their own specific characteristics and, without a doubt, their own problems that they need to overcome.

Everyone has their favorites too, so in some episodes, you'll be rooting for one person to bond with the other, no doubt. Character development and the level of fun were Ouran's biggest advantages.

This shoujo anime keeps you entertained almost all the time (except for one or two episodes around episode 19). The only weakness I found was the sound. I don't particularly care about the opening or the ending (although the opening wasn't that bad, I think).

So, in conclusion, it is almost impossible not to enjoy this anime. The ending is great and the direction is very well done. Want to feel good and laugh at the same time, check out Ouran.

Synopsis:

Haruhi Fujioka is a brilliant candidate for a no-charge or no-scholarship scholarship - a rare species at Ouran High School, an elite academy for high-blooded students.

When she opens the door to the Music Room #3, hoping to find a quiet place to study, Haruhi unexpectedly trips over the Host Club.

Led by princely Tamaki, the club - whose other members include "King of Shadows" Kyouya, Hitachiin's mischievous twins and infant Haninozuka "Honey" and his strong protector Mori - is where handsome boys with plenty of time in their hands entertain the girls at the gym.

In a frantic attempt to withdraw from the hosts, Haruhi ends up breaking a vase worth eight million yen and is forced to become the general errand boy for the eccentric group to pay off her huge debt.

However, thanks to her convincingly masculine appearance, her naturally genius disposition towards girls and her fascinating plebeian status, she is soon promoted to full-time hostess and plunges headlong into a flashy whirlwind of elaborate cosplays, rich food and antics. exciting that only the immensely rich Ouran Host Club can participate.

4. Cardcaptor Sakura

  • Name in English: Cardcaptor Sakura
  • Japanese name: Kadokyaputa Sakura
  • Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Magic, Romance, Fantasy, School, Shoujo
  • Episodes: 70
  • Displayed: April 7, 1998 to March 21, 2000
  • Studio: Madhouse
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: ??

My review:

Cardcaptor Sakura is perhaps the best mahou shoujo anime ever produced. One classic. It is one of those anime that everyone could enjoy, regardless of age and sex.

It is an example of a series that was not afraid to take risks and challenge common genre conventions to maximize quality.

And while Cardcaptor Sakura may look like a standard mahou shoujo anime at first glance, there's a lot more depth here than a superficial look can reveal. I recommend!

Synopsis:

Sakura Kinomoto is her fourth grade in the garden, at the age of ten, and until one day she finds a mysterious book containing a set of letters.

Unfortunately, she has little time to guess what the cards mean, because she accidentally awakens a magical gust and inadvertently spreads the cards all over the world.

Suddenly, awakened from the book, the Seal Beast, Keroberos (nicknamed Kero-chan), tells Sakura that she launched the mystical Clow Cards created by the wizard Clow Reed. Letters are not ordinary toys.

Each of them has incredible powers, and as they like to act independently, Clow sealed all the cards in one book.

Now that the cards are released, they pose a serious danger to the world, and it's up to Sakura to prevent the cards from causing a catastrophe! Naming Sakura the title of “Cardcaptor” and granting her the Sealed Key, Keroberos charges her with finding and recapturing all the Letters.

Beside her best friend Tomoyo Daidouji, and with Kero-chan's guidance, Sakura must learn to balance her new secret duty with the daily problems of a young girl that involves love, family and school, as she flies on her magical adventures. like Sakura to Cardcaptor.

  • Studio: JCStaff
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: ??

My review:

Maid Sama was the first shoujo anime I watched, thus having a great impact at the time for me, I had never seen anything like that before so I was enchanted by this style of anime with a tough but at the same time kawaii protagonist, the famous tsundere .

With very funny comedy scenes and a somewhat peculiar romance between Usui and Misaki. Overall the anime has innumerable cliches but still for me it remains one of the best anime shoujos I have ever watched. I recommend!

Take a look at this AMV below Maid Sama, I'm sure you'll want to watch it after seeing it!

AMV Kaichou wa maid sama

Synopsis:

Being the first female student council president is not easy, especially when your school has just passed a high school for boys.

Appropriately dubbed the "Demon President" by boys for his strict disciplinary style, Misaki Ayuzawa is not afraid to use his mastery of Aikido techniques to judge the hordes of boys who misbehave and defend girls at Seika High School.

However, even the perfect Ayuzawa has an embarrassing secret - she works part-time as a maid at a maid's cafe to help her struggling family pay the bills.

She managed to keep her work hidden from classmates and maintained her impeccable image as a stellar student until one day, Takumi Usui, the most popular boy at school, enters the maid's cafe. He could destroy her reputation with her secret.

Or you could twist the student council president around your little finger and use it as an opportunity to get closer to her.

6. Akatsuki no Yona

  • Name in English: Yona of the Dawn
  • Japanese name: Akatsuki no Yona
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Shoujo

  • Displayed: October 7, 2014 to March 24, 2015
  • Studio: Studio Pierrot
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll EN

My review:

By the end of this shoujo anime, you'll love it, it's really something worth your time. Akatsuki no Yona is definitely an anime that you will not forget. An anime that mixes action, adventure, comedy, romance and on top is a shoujo.

At first, the anime seems to be your common reverse harem, but at the end of the first episode, as the story continues, it seems to be more than that, it's really a well-written story, focused on revenge and betrayal, somewhat different other anime shoujos.

See the AMV of this anime shoujo that will undoubtedly leave you in love with this incredible art together with the sound of Counting Stars. There is no one to resist!

Akatsuki no Yona

Synopsis:

Princess Yona lives a life of luxury and ease, completely protected from the problems of Kouka's seemingly peaceful kingdom; however, the king's sudden murder and the betrayal of his beloved cousin Su-won put Yona's life in mortal danger.

Forced to flee only with Son Hak, who is her childhood friend and bodyguard, the naive princess soon discovers that Kouka is not the idyllic place she thought it was.

Poverty, conflict and corruption are rampant, making the recovery of the throne nothing more than a fantasy of desire, given the current state of the kingdom.

Based on the popular manga by Mizuho Kusanagi, Akatsuki no Yona follows Princess Yona on an older adventure, while facing the harsh realities of her kingdom.

With only a mysterious legend to guide her, Yona must discover a way to restore Kouka to its former glory, while being relentlessly pursued by the forces of the new king of Kouka.

  • Displayed: April 7, 2007 to September 29, 2007
  • Studio: Toei Animation
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: ??

My review:

Lovely Complex was a much more enjoyable series than I thought, but I'm always happy to see clichés resolve. It's true - there are no more original ideas, so all we need to do is write good stories, they don't have to be original stories, just good stories, solid stories, fun stories.

See this AMV from Lovely Complex it can please you a lot and make you watch this work, just like you did with me, I recommend!

Lovely Complex

Synopsis:

Lovely ★ Complex follows Koizumi and Ootani, who encourage each other to find love and become close friends.

8. Banana Fish

Banana Fish
Banana Fish
  • Name in English: Banana Fish
  • Japanese name: BANANA FISH
  • Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Shoujo
  • Episodes: 24
  • Displayed: July 6, 2018 to December 21, 2018
  • Studio: MAPPA
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: ??

My review:

At first it may not look like an anime shoujo but you can trust it throughout the episodes that will become clearer. The main attractive factor that drew me to watch Banana Fish is the relationship and character development. We found Ash Lynx, a sarcastic young man who ran away from home. Despite his not-so-friendly attitude, Ash has charisma that makes him a person who shouldn't be underestimated.

In essence, Banana Fish shows that, in its society, crime is more than just a social problem. In fact, Banana Fish contains adult content that may not be suitable for a younger audience, addressing things that are actually present in our social reality.

Synopsis:

Aslan Jade Callenreese, known as Ash Lynx, was a fugitive chosen on the streets of New York City and raised by the infamous mafia godfather, Dino Golzine.

Now, at the age of 17 and head of his own gang, Ash gets his hands on a mysterious drug called "Banana Fish" - the same two words that his older brother, Griffin, murmured since his return from the Iraq War.

However, his investigation is hampered when Dino sends his men to retrieve Ash's drug from an underground bar that he uses as a hideout.

At the bar, Ash's friend Skip introduces him to Shunichi Ibe and his assistant, Eiji Okumura, who are Japanese photographers who report American street gangs.

However, the conversation is interrupted when Shorter Wong, one of Ash's allies, calls to warn him about Dino.

Soon, Dino's men stormed the bar and, in the ensuing chaos, kidnapped Skip and Eiji.

9. Kamisama Hajimemashita

Kamisama Hajimemashita

  • Name in English: Kamisama Kiss
  • Japanese name: Kamisama Hajimemashita
  • Genre: Comedy, Demons, Supernatural, Romance, Fantasy, Shoujo

  • Displayed: October 2, 2012 to December 25, 2012
  • Studio: TMS Entertainment
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll EN

My review:

I found Kamisama Kiss a lovely gem. It is not popular compared to some of the other shoujo series in the industry.

But what she does have is a relaxing way to present romance mixed with comedy, especially with the weird duo of Nanami and Tomoe. Another great anime shoujo!

Synopsis:

Nanami Momozono, a high school student, has had a lot of problems lately, starting with her absent father, with a debt so extreme that they lose everything.

Offended and homeless, she finds a man being harassed by a dog. After helping him, she explains his situation and, to his surprise, he offers his home in gratitude.

But when she finds out that the home is a degraded sanctuary, she tries to leave; however, she is caught by two spirits from the sanctuary and by a fox known as Tomoe.

They mistake it for the man Nanami rescued - the god of the land of the sanctuary, Mikage. Realizing that Mikage must have sent her there as a substitute god, Tomoe abruptly leaves, refusing to serve a human.

Instead of becoming homeless again, Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she needs to keep things running smoothly, she'll need the help of a hot-headed fox.

In her awkward attempt to find Tomoe, she gets into trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him.

Now the two must travel together on the path of divinity as god and family; but it will not be easy, as new threats appear in the form of a youkai who wants to devour the girl, a snake who wants to marry her and Nanami's unexpected feelings for his new relative.

10. Kimi ni Todoke

  • Name in English: From Me to You
  • Japanese name: Kimi ni Todoke
  • Genre: Slice of Life, Drama, Romance, School, Shoujo
  • Episodes: 25
  • Displayed: October 7, 2009 to March 31, 2010
  • Studio: Production IG
  • Trailer: Teaser
  • Where to Watch: ??

My review:

Kimi ni Todake is easily one of the top 5 series for me and one of the best shoujo anime of the decade. It was immediately attractive to me from the first episode and I am extremely sad to see it end.

This is how more romance animes should be made and should not be wasted by those who like the genre, even for a little while. I recommend this shoujo anime heartily!

Synopsis:

Kuronuma Sawako is completely misunderstood by his classmates. Their shy and sweet behavior is often mistaken for malicious behavior.

This is due to the resemblance to the ghost girl from “The Ring”, which led her colleagues to give the nickname Sadako.

Wishing to make friends and live a normal life, she is naturally attracted to Kazehaya Shouta, the most popular guy in the class, whose “refreshing 100%” personality gives her a great admiration for Sawako.

So, when Kazehaya starts talking to her, maybe there is hope for the friendships that Sawako has always wanted. Perhaps there is still some hope for some romance in your future.

My review:

It's such a beautiful love story in a way. Instead of having a lot of those sweet and sad moments together, they created an inspiring love that blossomed in people's hearts.

They don't try to make the series melodramatic, they just allow us to explore all the characters freely until we all love them. An inspiring and very beautiful anime shoujo. You have my total recommendation!

Synopsis:

With his muscular build and tall stature, Takeo Gouda is not exactly his middle school freshman.

However, behind his intimidating appearance, a heart of gold is hidden, and he is considered a hero by the boys for his courage and chivalry. Unfortunately, these traits do not help much in your love life.

As if her appearance was not enough to keep the opposite sex away, Takeo's cool and beautiful best friend and constant companion Makoto Sunakawa easily steals the students' hearts - including all the girls Takeo has ever liked.

When Takeo gallantly saves Rinko Yamato, cute and angelic, from being molested, he falls in love with her instantly, but suspects that she may be interested in Sunakawa.

Yamato finds her intriguing and insists on being his friend, even though Mei wants nothing to do with him.

But when a dangerous situation ends with Yamato kissing Mei to save her from the unwanted attention of a stalker, Mei begins to develop feelings for him.

In the wake of her discovery that her feelings are mutual, they start dating and she gains not only a boyfriend, but also friends.

Mei, however, finds it very difficult to adapt to this new lifestyle, especially when expressing her true feelings towards Yamato.

Amid misunderstandings of their new relationship, each other and the attentions of other girls, Mei and Yamato slowly approach and learn the true meaning of these three little words: "I love you".

Synopsis:

Cross Academy is an elite boarding school with two separate and isolated classes: Day Class and Night Class. On the surface, Yuuki Cross and Zero Kiryuu are monitors at the academy and try to maintain order among students as classes take place at night.

As the night class is full of absolutely beautiful elites, this can sometimes be a little difficult. It is completely necessary, however, as these "elites" are really vampires.

Yuuki and Zero act as guardians, protecting the secrets of the Night Class and the safety of their ignorant colleagues in the morning. As the adopted daughter of the president of the academy, Yuuki accepts her job with a serious and energetic attitude.

It also allows her to interact with her secret and saving passion, the president of the students' dormitory of the Night, Kaname Kuran. Zero, on the other hand, has a deep-rooted hatred against vampires and sometimes does not hesitate to kill.

Can vampires and humans coexist, even in the strict Cross Academy scenario? Only time will tell.
